Summer is coming and with it, a whole host of cooking smells or rubbish bin odours exacerbated by the heat! The rising temperatures also favour the growth of bacteria and mould. Having a clean home therefore becomes a task of the utmost importance... But how can this be achieved without chemicals and harmful products?

Two words: essential oils! They sanitize, smell great and are completely natural!

Follow the Batmaid guide and you will discover the wonderful world of essential oils.

A sweet-smelling bathroom

Essential oils are the perfect way to disinfect your bathroom and permanently get rid of mould in a natural way.

Tea tree oil is your biggest ally when it comes to cleaning the bathroom.

It truly is the Swiss Army Knife of essential oils: It's antibacterial, anti-fungal, a dust mite killer and as a bonus leaves the room smelling fresh. It is particularly useful for cleaning your metal bathroom fixtures without having to use toxic paint strippers.

Pro tip: Place a drop of tea tree oil on an old toothbrush, get scrubbing and your joints will look good as new! If you want to know more and become a real expert, read our article on bathroom cleaning.

Now that your bathroom is nice and clean, why not treat yourself to a relaxing bath? This leads us to the next use for essential oils -- spicing up your time spent in the tub. Lavender or chamomile are ideal for relaxing, while orange will invigorate you and ylang-ylang will awaken your senses.

A sparkling kitchen

Essential oils are also a force to be reckoned with in the kitchen when dealing with unpleasant odours. The two most effective agents are lemon and cinnamon. Lemon essential oil is also a dust mite killer and has a powerful and refreshing scent. Cinnamon fights germs effectively in the kitchen and throughout the house.

Pro tips:

  • For a great smelling fridge, apply a few drops of lemon essential oil on a porous stone or in a glass container and place it inside the fridge. Also remember that it’s important to wash your fridge regularly. For more tips and tricks on how to do this, follow our guide ➡️ batmaid.ch/blog/en/why-should-i-clean-my-fridge-regularly

  • To neutralise the smells coming from your bin, especially in the summer heat, a few drops of cinnamon oil on a piece of cloth placed at the bottom of your bin will do the trick! But be careful, wear gloves to do this and aerate the room throughout!

Relaxation and essential oils

Essential oils also have therapeutic properties. Lavender remains by far the most renowned of all relaxing essential oils... A small drop of lavender on your wrists and you will feel your stress dissipating.
They can also create cozy atmospheres in your home. Invest in a purpose-built diffuser, it will be a worthwhile investment!

There are two types of diffusers:

  • Mist diffusers that mix water and essential oils, of which there are a plethora of models and colours available.
  • Cold diffusion diffusers that use only essential oils and offer more potent effects.

Don't take our word for it though, have a try for yourselves!

You can also scent your household linen with lavender for a guaranteed freshening effect!
